Macro Site Fundamentals
Course
Macro Site Fundamentals covers tower planning, construction, troubleshooting, RF diagrams, hardware components, co-siting, C-RAN, and tower construction.
Welcome to Macro Site Fundamentals
Welcome to Macro Site Fundamentals, a technical course developed by the Telecommunications Education Center (TEC) to build a practical understanding of macro cell site design, infrastructure, and operation.
Macro cell sites are the backbone of modern wireless networks. They provide the wide-area coverage that enables mobile communication, broadband access, public safety systems, and emerging technologies such as 5G and AI-enabled applications.
This course introduces how macro sites are structured, how their hardware and RF systems function, and how they are designed, constructed, and maintained in real-world deployments.
No prior technical experience is required, though the material will move beyond basic concepts into applied understanding.
Who This Course Is For
This course is intended for:
- Individuals entering the wireless or telecommunications industry
- Professionals working in or alongside infrastructure, construction, or network teams
- Learners preparing for more advanced technical training in wireless deployment and design
The emphasis is on practical understanding of real-world macro sites, not theoretical abstraction alone.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify different types of macro cell sites and tower structures
- Describe the key hardware components and RF systems used at a site
- Interpret RF plumbing diagrams and understand signal flow
- Explain co-siting strategies and diversity configurations
- Understand grounding, lightning protection, and site safety practices
- Recognize the phases of tower construction and applicable industry standards
- Describe modern architectures such as RRH, FTTA, and C-RAN
Course Format and Structure
The core instructional content is delivered as a self-paced interactive e-learning module in the next section of the LMS.
The course includes:
- Short, focused instructional segments
- Real-world visuals and technical diagrams
- Scenario-based learning and applied examples
- Knowledge checks to reinforce key concepts
You may complete the course in one session or return to it later. Progress is saved automatically.
Time Commitment
The estimated time to complete this course is approximately 2–3 hours, depending on your pace and level of review..
