Course
Purchase Length: 6 months
Purchase for $59

This course explores the technical foundations, industry landscape, and strategic value of Satellite Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology as a supplement to terrestrial wireless networks.

Welcome to Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity: Foundations, Technology, and Telecom Applications

Welcome to this advanced technical course designed by the Telecommunications Education Center (TEC).

Getting Started

To get the most out of this module, we recommend that you have already completed Wireless 101 and the 5G Ecosystem courses. This background will help you better understand how Satellite Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology serves as a powerful supplement to existing terrestrial wireless networks.

Course Overview

We are currently witnessing a transformation in mobile connectivity. While traditional satellite services required specialized dishes or hardware, Satellite Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology allows standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites in orbit.

This course explores the technical foundations of D2D, the anatomy of modern communication satellites, and how these solutions extend coverage into remote, rural, and critical environments. Through scenario-driven lessons, we will examine how this "layered connectivity" improves network resilience and prepares the industry for a future of seamless, integrated service.

Who This Course Is For

This course is designed for professionals who need a solid grasp of where the industry is heading:

Project & Program Managers: To understand the new capabilities and strategic value of D2D deployments.

Site Acquisition & Legal Specialists: To recognize how satellite integration and spectrum allocation impact infrastructure planning.

Sales & Business Development: To better communicate the value of supplemental coverage from space to clients and partners.

Field Leaders: To stay ahead of the curve on the equipment and standards appearing in the 2026 roadmap.

This course was developed in collaboration with industry subject matter experts and academic partners and reflects current industry standards as of 2026.

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the history and evolution of satellite communications from Sputnik to modern LEO constellations.

  •  Identify the main structural subsystems of a communication satellite, including payloads and transponders.
  •  Differentiate D2D from terrestrial and fixed broadband satellite services.
  •  Understand technical mechanics like signal propagation, spectrum allocation, and the "link budget gap".
  • Evaluate real-world use cases and industry partnerships shaping the D2D market landscape.
  • Discuss the future of layered connectivity and how AI-driven optimization will enhance the user experience.

Course Format and Structure

The core instructional content is delivered as a self-paced interactive e-learning module.

The course includes:

  • 11 Lessons covering everything from satellite anatomy to future integration.

  •  Scenario-Driven Activities to test field decision-making.
  •  Visual Diagrams and technical illustrations.
  • Knowledge Checks and a Final Quiz to reinforce learning.

Time Commitment

The estimated time to complete this course is approximately 2 hours, depending on your pace and engagement with the interactive scenarios.

Completion and Certificate

Upon successful completion of this course and the final assessment, you will receive a certificate of completion from the Telecommunications Education Center (TEC).
