Generative AI in Telecom: Applications, Risks, and Responsible Use
Course
Learn how generative AI (GenAI) can transform telecom operations, customer experience, and internal efficiency, and how to deploy it responsibly. This course explains how GenAI differs from predictive machine learning, how retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) grounds AI in company knowledge, where AI agents fit, and the risks and controls every telecom team should know.
Welcome to Generative AI in Telecom: Applications, Risks, and Responsible Use
Welcome to Generative AI in Telecom: Applications, Risks, and Responsible Use, a course developed by the Telecommunications Education Center (TEC) to give telecom professionals a practical, grounded understanding of generative AI and how to use it well.
Generative AI (GenAI) has moved quickly from novelty to everyday tool. Mobile operators are using it to summarize trouble tickets, draft documentation, answer customer questions, and support engineers during incidents. At the same time, many of these efforts stall at the pilot stage, most often because the outputs aren't accurate enough to trust.
This course explains both sides. It shows where GenAI creates real value in telecom, how techniques such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) make its answers more accurate and checkable, and why people still need to review what it produces. It closes with the risks and controls that make GenAI safe to deploy, and a practice scenario set in a network operations center (NOC).
No programming or data science background is required.
Who This Course Is For
This course is intended for:
- Professionals working in mobile and wireless telecommunications, including network operations, engineering, customer care, marketing, and IT
- Managers and leaders who will evaluate, approve, or oversee GenAI projects
- Learners who have completed an introductory AI course, such as TEC's AI Foundations and Strategic Impact in Telecom, and want to go deeper on generative AI
The emphasis is on practical judgment: knowing what GenAI is good at, where it fails, and what to check before acting on its output.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Distinguish generative AI from predictive machine learning, and choose which fits a given telecom task
- Explain how retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) grounds AI answers in company knowledge, and recognize where it can go wrong
- Identify high-value GenAI uses across customer experience and internal operations
- Describe what AI agents can do on their own, and where operators should require human approval
- Identify the main risks of GenAI in telecom, including hallucination, data leakage, and prompt injection, and match each to a practical control
- Apply responsible-AI principles to a realistic network incident
For best performance:
- Use a modern browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox
- Complete the course on a desktop or laptop when possible
Time Commitment
The estimated time to complete this course is approximately 75 minutes, depending on your pace and level of review.
Completion and Certificate
Upon successful completion, including a score of 80% or higher on the final quiz, you will receive a certificate of completion.
Certificates are generated automatically once all course requirements are met.
